About

David Miller

David Miller lives and works near Saratoga Springs, NY where he formerly taught painting at Skidmore College. He has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions, and was honored in 2001 with a Retrospective exhibition at the Tang Museum. His paintings are displayed in several museums, and are in numerous corporate and private collections in the U.S. and abroad. In addition, he has received major grant awards including one from the National Endowment for the Arts, and another from the New York Foundation for the Arts. In his essay from the Tang exhibit catalogue, noted writer and poet John Yau states:

"One of the strengths of Miller's art is his ability to embody complex, often paradoxical feelings within a single work. His paintings don't yield a single narrative, but many. One feels that the layering Miller uses isn't only a formal device but a way of investigating disparate feelings, particularly as they underscore the irresolvable tension between wonderment and memory."

Artist's Statement

My work is about the phenomenon of time and how it relates to gravity. In most of these paintings there appears to be little or no gravity at all. Each composition begins with an openness, and layers of gestures that suggest fragments of reality, which float and create a range of tension within the ungrounded space. This open forum becomes a game explored through a variety of shapes, marks and colors that express visual, sociological or text-based events. Each painting is worked into during many studio sessions, sub-consciously and consciously, which encourages risk-taking then deals with formal issues. As the composition develops, decisions are made regarding gravitational pull, layering of paint, opacity, translucency, and visual speed, ultimately establishing tension and emotional temperature. The resulting chaos becomes a visual fantasy much like a broken puzzle.
